Keep Walking – part II

There is a famous line by Winston Churchill: “If you’re going through hell, keep going.”

In the process of recovery, bettering yourself or going to the next level, a lot of people don’t like the process of getting there. But making it to that next level usually means going through some hell at some point.

Psalm 23:4 says, “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort.” Continue reading

It’s all about perspective

I said to a friend the other day that perspective is what we need when circumstances aren’t what we want them to be. That’s primarily how I’ve been able to be positive through it all. The Bible says to seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness and all things will be given to us (Matthew 6:33). When we put the focus on God instead of what is directly in front of us, it should shift our thinking.

Now I’m not saying I don’t get frustrated at my situation. At times, I get downright upset. But I don’t get consumed by my thoughts or feelings. Instead I am consumed with the thought that this is temporary. There’s a lesson in that. Watch what you think!

So rather than just saying, “Keep a positive perspective,” here are some thoughts on how to do that.

1) First ask yourself, how can I make this positive? Is there a learning moment for you or perhaps someone else? Sometimes, it’s not always about us.

2) Focus on the moveable parts. In other words, what can you change? Identify it and do it. If it’s out of your control, move on. That’s the Serenity Prayer in action.

3) Sweat the small stuff. Yes I said that right. Even though you may have your goal and see the vision, the journey of a thousand miles begins with one step. The little things add up. Don’t overlook them.

Keep looking up!

It’s not over

This song encourages me when times get tough. “When God is in it, all things are new.”

Have a listen. Be encouraged!

Despite the odds

I had an idea to start a blog before I got sick. Really, I had come up with a lot of ideas for my life – start a blog, write a book, write a movie… along with pastoring a church and going around speaking publicly. I had all these ideas. And now when I look at my life and circumstances, I sometimes wonder if they are still dreams to have.

Will you continue to hold onto your dreams when it gets tough?

I don’t let my sickness hold back the plans I have for myself. And I don’t let my condition hold back the plans God has for me either. I know a lot of people would have stopped after the diagnosis. I keep going.

How? I think it’s a combination of two things. It’s the faith to wait on God and then the courage to believe in what He has said. You might miss your opportunity if you don’t have the courage to believe, despite the odds; despite what it looks like.

Even if you are lacking in some way or another, all is not lost. While we may not know our limits, God does. We may think that we don’t have enough courage or faith. But what God knows is that we may have just enough to get us to the place He has for us.

Adjusting to the Good, Bad and the Ugly

This week was filled with some ups and some downs. I was out and about with “places to go and people to see.” It was nice; being active, out of the house, not thinking all the time about my circumstances.

One incident though gave me a different dose of reality. Exiting the pool after one of my therapy sessions, I had a difficult time finding my balance. This had not happened before. I guess it was the change in pressure or the gravity… but whatever it was, it took me awhile to get back used to my surroundings.

How are you when it comes to adjusting to life’s changes? Continue reading
